In September 2025, the INCITE team visited Finland to explore the latest innovations in the pulp and paper sector. The visits, organised with the support of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, allowed INCITE to meet industrial teams, learn about cutting-edge technologies, and strengthen collaboration with Finnish stakeholders. Participants included representatives from the European Commission, the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Finnish Environment Institute.

The first visit took place at Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Äänekoski. The team learned how the mill operates without fossil fuels while producing pulp and a range of bio-based products. They visited the Kuura textile fibre pilot line, which turns wood pulp into sustainable fibres, and the Muoto packaging demonstration plant, where wood fibres are formed into recyclable and biodegradable packaging. The visit also included Veolia’s biomethanol plant, which converts side-stream waste from pulp production into renewable chemicals.
The following day, the team visited Valmet’s pilot lines in Jyväskylä, touring the paper production and drying processes as well as the quality control laboratories. The visit highlighted Valmet’s role in developing efficient and sustainable paper production technologies.

These visits showcased how Finnish companies are combining innovation, sustainability, and circular economy principles to create low-carbon, bio-based solutions for the future. INCITE thanks the Finnish Forest Industries Federation and all participating institutions for making this visit possible.
