The INCITE team, recently concluded a mission to Portugal (27 - 28 of May) to assess cutting-edge industrial techniques advancing decarbonisation, circular economy practices, and pollution control in the pulp and paper sector.

The visit, organised with BIOND (Associação das Bioindústrias de Base Florestal), the European Confederation of Paper Industries (CEPI), included site visits at The Navigator Company, Celbi and the RAIZ Forest and Paper Research Institute. The Portugal’s Environmental Agency (APA) also participated in the visit.

Key innovations highlighted:

  • Navigator’s biomass-fueled lime kiln, eliminating natural gas use, and a white water recovery pilot cutting freshwater demand by 17%.
  • Celbi’s fibrous material digester, using saw dust to reduce wood consumption while enhancing pulp quality.
  • RAIZ’s circular economy projects, including pulp and paper waste for ash-based construction materials.

The mission highlighted how innovation, industry leadership, and regulatory cooperation are accelerating the pulp and paper sector’s transition toward a zero-emission, circular economy model.
